Nature of the assessment

Homework task

Purposes of the assessment

To assess students’ understanding of health safety in the context of outdoor sports

Stage in the Teaching sequence

Start of a teaching cycle – formative assessment

Assessment task

Students were required to research preventive health and safety measures for their chosen context: bicycle riding, skateboarding, beach swimming or their favourite team sport.

Assessment process

As a warm-up activity to the assessment task, students completed the K and W sections of a KWL chart (what I already know, what I wonder and what I learnt).

As a homework task, the students researched their topic and prepared advice for other students participating in the activity.

Once they had submitted their work, the students completed the ‘L’ component of the KWL chart. They then shared their reflections on what they had learnt with a partner.

Using the information

The teacher used the students’ research and their discussions to review the information already collected. He realised that students had more advanced understandings of preventive health measures than he had anticipated. He took this into account and reworked his future lesson plans.
