spectacle

The practice of adding heightened sensory experiences in drama to extend emotional and social experience of the drama event. This includes a drama event’s use of scale, moving sets, moving lighting effects, puppetry, pyrotechnics, dynamic soundscapes, flying effects, illusions and dramatic surprises. Spectacle, it should be noted, adds to the meaning of the drama event. In cases where spectacle does not add to the meaning of the drama event, it is often dismissed as tokenism or showy.
