design and technology

Refers to the broad category of equipment, techniques and processes associated with design that support dramatic meaning. This includes providing details that communicate or reinforce the elements of drama including situation, mood and dramatic tension. Design and technology is often explained in relation to particular design roles. In the Drama syllabus those design roles include:

  • Scenographer: see Scenography

  • Sound designer: see Sound design.
  • Costume designer: see Costume design.

The role of technology continues to change with advances in live video sampling and other techniques including special effects that add to the experience of live theatre. Design and technology also has an important role in spectacle which contributes to the aesthetic experience of drama.
