Applying for permission to produce a ‘Good Answer Guide’ publication using ATAR course examination responses

Professional Teachers’ Associations can apply for permission to produce a Good Answer Guide publication that includes selected ATAR examination responses. These publications help teachers and students prepare for future examinations. The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) manages the approval process, including candidate permissions and must approve the draft before it is published.

This flowchart outlines the steps, timelines, and responsibilities for producing a Good Answer Guide.

Process

1. Application and Licence Agreement

  • The Teachers’ Association submits an application to use Authority materials and candidates’ ATAR course examination responses. (Please note the Authority cannot grant permission for any third-party copyright material listed in the acknowledgements of examination materials.)
  • If approved, a licence agreement is sent to the Teachers’ Association for signature.
  • The Teachers’ Association signs the licence and returns it to the Copyright Team.
  • The licence is countersigned by the Assistant Executive Director and returned to the Teachers’ Association.

2. Access to Candidate Responses

  • The Copyright Team notifies the Principal Consultant – Written Examinations that a licence has been issued.
  • The Teachers’ Association liaises with Principal Consultant – Written Examinations to obtain candidate responses. These are available mid-January to 20 February 2026. Contact: examswr@scsa.wa.edu.
  • The Principal Consultant – Written Examinations will contact the Association to arrange a time to access the scripts.

3. Candidate Permissions

  • On behalf of the Teachers’ Association, the Authority will seek permission from selected candidates to use their examination responses. About three weeks after the Teachers’ Association selects the scripts, the Authority will provide the scripts of candidates who have granted permission.

4. Invoice Processing

  • Examination Logistics invoices the Teachers’ Association for the student scripts and administrative expenses in mid-February to late March.

5. Draft and Submission

  • Using the responses, the Teachers’ Association prepares the draft Good Answer Guide.
  • The final draft is emailed to the Copyright Team: copyrightteam@scsa.wa.edu.au

6. Review and Feedback

  • The Curriculum Specialist reviews the draft (approx. 2 weeks).
  • Feedback is provided to the Teachers’ Association via the Copyright Team.

7. Revisions and Final Review

  • If no changes are required, the draft is approved for publication.
  • If changes are required:
    • The Teachers’ Association must address all feedback and return the revised draft to: copyrightteam@scsa.wa.edu.au
    • The Curriculum Specialist checks if response to feedback is complete:
      • If satisfied: approval is issued.
      • If not: further feedback is provided to the Teachers' Association via the Copyright Team.
  • Revisions continue until all feedback is resolved.

8. Final Approval and Submission

  • Once all changes are confirmed and approved, formal publication approval is issued by the Copyright Team.
  • A final printed or digital copy must be submitted to the Authority (attention: Library Officer, School Curriculum and Standards Authority, 303 Sevenoaks Street, Cannington WA 6107 or copyrightteam@scsa.wa.edu.au) for record keeping.

Note: The confidentiality of all information relating to the examinations must be respected and must not be used for personal gain or benefit. All work remains the property of the Authority.
