Early Years

In the Early Childhood Phase of Schooling (Kindergarten to Year 2), educators must be guided by the following frameworks:

  • Early Years Learning Framework Learning Outcomes (Birth to 5 years of age)
  • Early Years Learning Framework Vision, Principles and Practices (Birth to Year 2)
  • Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline (Pre-primary to Year 10)

The Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines (the Guidelines) are an exemplification of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) for the Kindergarten year.

The Authority has produced a series of videos for teaching and learning that exemplify the interconnectedness of the EYLF, the Guidelines and the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline. The videos capture and demonstrate how the EYLF Principles and Practices guide pedagogical decision making for children from birth though to Year 2 in Western Australia. They provide clarity and direction in relation to developmentally appropriate pedagogy, play-based learning and intentionality, and holistic approaches.
