Early Childhood Teaching and Learning Videos Support Materials
An series of videos has been produced to support teaching and learning practices across the Early Years Phase of Schooling from Kindergarten to Year 2 that reflect the expectations in the Authority’s Early Years of Schooling Policy and the Kindergarten and Pre-primary Statement https://k10outline.scsa.wa.edu.au/home/principles/guiding-principles/phases-of-schooling. The videos exemplify the Vision, Principles and Practices of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the Learning Outcomes from the Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines (the Guidelines).

Incorporating multi-age groups, multicultural perspectives and dialogue of children, teachers and school leaders, each video has an organic, active and immersive quality that captures the deep and expansive knowledge of our early childhood professionals. They demonstrate passion, articulate the reasons behind decision-making in early childhood and authentically represent ‘best practice’. The videos were not scripted prior to filming and demonstrate the deep understanding of the development of children in this phase of schooling, the national frameworks and the Guidelines. It should also be noted videos 1 – 7 were filmed late in Term 4.

Video Six: Early Childhood Kindergarten to Year 2 Overview
An introduction to the early childhood phase of schooling, exploring the complexities of best practice in early childhood with commentary from school leaders and early childhood specialist teachers.
A snapshot illustrating a collaboration between kindergarten to Year 2 educators to demonstrate an intentionally designed opportunity to routinely bring together the early childhood phase of schooling through intentional play experiences. This demonstrates a unique and purposeful initiative which unites the Western Australian curriculum, the Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines and the Principles and Practices of the EYLF.
Video Eight: Early Career Educators
A snapshot to support early career (or new to early childhood) educators to recognise and reflect on the teaching and learning expectations for the early childhood phase of schooling. As a complex phase of schooling, this video promotes the content and pedagogy described in the Phase of Schooling and K P Statement.
Video Nine: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives
Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in all educators’ philosophy and practice is a key tool to advance Reconciliation. This also contributes to Closing the Gap commitments and fulfilling every Australian child’s right to know about Australia’s First Nations’ histories, knowledge systems, cultures and languages. This video explores the ways Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives are being infused at Anne Hammersley Primary School, offering ideas and stimulus for schools and teachers to reflect on their application of the EYLF Principle: Embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in their setting, their planning and implementation of the curriculum; and the EYLF Practice: Cultural Responsiveness.
Video Ten: Reconciliation Action Plan
This video follows a Noongar-Ballardong teacher as she tells her story of bringing a community together at Anne Hammersley Primary School as they journey towards a meaningful Reconciliation Action Plan.
Video Eleven: Year 2 Play-based Learning
An illustration of a holistic and integrated approach in Year 2 through ‘blended pedagogies’. This video exemplifies the application of the EYLF Vision, Principles and Practices in Year 2, including play-based learning with intentionality and collaborative leadership and teamwork.
Video Twelve: Learning Environments
A snapshot illustrating a collection of indoor and outdoor learning environments observed in Kindergarten to Year 2 classrooms. The environments demonstrate a range of ways to design and use spaces to integrate the expectations of the Kindergarten Curriculum Guideline, Early Years Learning Framework and the Western Australian Curriculum.
