Mathematics creates opportunities for, and enriches the lives of, all Australians. The Western Australian Curriculum: Mathematics provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge. The curriculum focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning skills and provides the fundamentals on which mathematical specialities and professional applications of mathematics are built.

Studying mathematics helps students think critically, logically and creatively to make sense of the world. It underpins advancements in science, technology and many other fields. The use of mathematics provides a powerful and precise language for communication and problem-solving.

Making connections across mathematical concepts and other subject areas enhances students’ ability to understand the purpose of learning mathematics and to develop a deeper conceptual understanding. Digital tools facilitate the expansion of ideas, providing access to mathematical exploration and invention. The curriculum helps students to recognise the role of mathematics in real-world problems, applying their understanding to familiar and unfamiliar situations.
